The influence of the environment on respiratory diseases

It is not new for ranchers that certain diseases can be accentuated with very high or very low temperatures. Other factors such as low water quality or humidity can predispose animals to the disease.

From ADA we have led one of the project packages PROHEALTH for sustainable disease control in pig and poultry production. To date, this has been the largest EU-funded project on animal health and welfare.

Thanks to PROHEALTH, an innovative system was developed to measure environmental conditions and health status. in real time on the farms. This obtained data from a wide variety of production systems in five European countries over 16 months.

This data was combined with the production data into a single data set. This set was used to form two statistical models applied to respiratory diseases. The variation in environmental indicators could explain, and even predict, disease outbreaks in swine production.
